At Soka, Ibadan today, a group of hoodlums reportedly went around the neighborhood terrorizing homeowners, threatening to demolish their buildings. They demanded that residents "repurchase" the very land on which their homes stand.
What is most disturbing is that many of these homeowners already possess valid Certificates of Occupancy (C of Os) issued by the Oyo State Government. Yet, this did not deter these individuals from defacing gates and fences and, in some cases, using bulldozers to pull down fences. Sadly, this is a repeat of what happened in 2018.
My question to the Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency, Seyi Makinde, is this:
What is the value of a Certificate of Occupancy if homeowners can still be subjected to intimidation and harassment by land grabbers? What protection does this government-issued document actually provide?
Before a C of O is issued, homeowners are required to submit all the necessary documentation to establish legitimate ownership. If, after meeting all those requirements, law-abiding citizens can still be terrorized by land grabbers, then something is fundamentally wrong and demands urgent government intervention.
