Diagnosis & Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease

Early diagnosis of sickle cell disease is essential for effective management and a better quality of life. The condition is diagnosed through blood tests, such as genotype testing and haemoglobin electrophoresis, which identify the type of haemoglobin a person has. In many countries, newborn screening also helps detect the disease early.

Although there is currently no universal cure, sickle cell disease can be effectively managed with proper medical care. Treatment may include pain-relieving medications during crises, antibiotics to prevent infections, folic acid supplements, regular medical check-ups, blood transfusions when necessary, and medicines such as hydroxyurea to reduce the frequency of pain crises. For a small number of eligible patients, a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant may offer a potential cure.

With early diagnosis, consistent treatment, and healthy lifestyle habits, many people living with sickle cell disease can lead long, healthy, and productive lives.
