MY POSITION ON HOW TO TACKLE UNEMPLOYMENT AND INSECURITY IN NIGERIA

One of the major steps towards addressing unemployment in Nigeria is having accurate and reliable data about our workforce.

We need to know who is genuinely employed, who is unemployed, the skills people have, and the areas where opportunities are needed most.

There are concerns about issues like ghost workers, multiple salary collections from different institutions, and systems that do not properly track employment status. These gaps make it difficult to plan effectively and ensure resources get to the right people.

However, solving unemployment goes beyond data alone. We also need to create an environment where businesses can grow, industries can thrive, young people can acquire relevant skills, and decent jobs can be created.

A country that understands its workforce can make better decisions. Good data, accountability, and deliberate job creation must work together if we want to reduce unemployment and insecurity.

Felix: I agree, because accurate data is the foundation, but lasting progress will come from combining it with policies that support businesses, skills development, investment, and transparent governance.
Shadan: Well said. Accurate data is the foundation of good governance. If a nation cannot tell who is working, who is unemployed, and what skills its people possess, it will struggle to design effective policies.
