Iran Launches Missile Attack on U.S. Forces; All Projectiles Intercepted.
Iran launched a missile attack on U.S. military bases in the Middle East on Wednesday night in what the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) described as an attempted surprise assault. According to CENTCOM, all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted, and no damage or casualties were immediately reported.
Multiple reports indicated that the attack targeted the Muwaffaq Al Salti Air Base in Jordan, where U.S. forces are stationed. The strike came just days after President Donald Trump suggested that Iran had shown interest in resuming negotiations with Washington following weeks of heightened military tensions.
Speaking during a campaign rally in Michigan earlier in the week, Trump said "friendly talks are underway" with Iran but warned that the United States remained prepared to respond with overwhelming force if necessary. He also told reporters that recent U.S. military operations had significantly weakened Iran's military capabilities, adding that Tehran's willingness to engage in dialogue was a direct result of those actions.
However, Iran publicly rejected the claim that it had sought negotiations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said reports suggesting Tehran had requested talks did not reflect the country's position and insisted such claims were inconsistent with Iran's principles.
The latest exchange follows weeks of escalating confrontation between the two countries. After nearly two weeks of sustained U.S. strikes against Iranian targets, Washington paused military operations last Friday.
Although both sides had previously signed a memorandum of understanding, tensions resurfaced after Iran allegedly violated the agreement by refusing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and targeting commercial cargo vessels.
In response, the United States reinstated a full naval blockade on Iranian ports, a move the Trump administration said was inflicting significant economic losses on Iran. Wednesday's missile attack underscores the fragile security situation in the region and raises fresh concerns over the possibility of further military escalation despite ongoing diplomatic rhetoric.
