On January 12, 1970, Nigerians in Lagos celebrated as Biafran forces surrender, bringing an end to the civil war. Major General Yakubu Gowon, the leader of Nigeria, accepted the surrender and called on the nation to embrace the former rebels as brothers, promoting unity and reconciliation.
