A planet larger than its star 🪐

In 2020, astronomers discovered a remarkable system in the constellation Draco: WD 1856+534 b.

The planet is comparable in size to Jupiter, yet it is roughly seven times larger than its star. Sound impossible?
In reality, its star is a white dwarf—the remnant of a massive star that shed most of its mass and shrank to a size comparable to Earth.

The orbit is extreme: WD 1856+534 b is located about 50 times closer to its star than Earth is to the Sun. As a result, a year on the planet lasts just 34 hours.
