The word 'first' was also used in Revelation 2:4. Our first love is God's love for us, not our love for him. The believer is to put his attention on what Jesus has done. If we talk about Jesus long enough, we will see that he is altogether lovely. Everything the woman did to Jesus is because Jesus first accepted her. He loved us, then we serve him.
Romans 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
He is good to us, then we repent. True repentance is when a man sees the forgiveness of God. As believers, we act right because we are already forgiven. God has forgiven us in Christ so that our love for him will be true and genuine. Right standing with God comes before right living. We live right because we have been justified.
James 2:14-23
Observe that the works was to help another person. That was James’s emphasis.
Verse 23 refers to Genesis 15. Abraham was justified by faith without works in Genesis 15. Abraham gave birth to Isaac in Genesis 22 after he had been justified. The works came after the justification. The giving of Isaac was a proof of his justification.
In Genesis 16,what Abraham did was unbelief and sin because he took on Agar even though he had been justified by faith. In Genesis 17, God told him to walk before him.In Genesis 20, He lied to Abimelech yet he was still righteousIn Genesis 21-22, he gave Isaac.
Hence, Abraham grew over time. God gave him gifts of righteousness freely and Abraham by his works showed proofs that God had forgiven him freely. Abraham's works did not bring him justification before God. In James, he was talking about justification before men. He said 'show me' not 'show God'. This means as believers, we are to walk in love, help people in need as a proof of our justification, not to be justified. We love because he first loved us. Righteousness is a gift in Christ Jesus. When believers sin, we are not referred to as sinners. The believer has been declared righteous in Christ.
*Confession: I have been declared righteous in Christ. I walk in love as a proof of my justification in Christ.*
