Every day, millions of people argue about one question that has divided families, broken relationships, and fuelled endless social media debates:

Is money more important than love?

Some insist that true love conquers all. Others argue that love without financial stability is simply prolonged suffering.

But perhaps nature has already given us the answer.

The Fish and Water Relationship Theory

Imagine a fish.

The fish may be beautiful, strong, intelligent, and healthy. It may even have another fish that loves it deeply.

But remove the water...

What happens?

The love between the two fish cannot keep either of them alive.

The strongest bond cannot replace the environment required for survival.

In this theory:

- The fish represents romantic love.
- The water represents financial stability.

Love gives life meaning.

Money provides the environment in which that love can breathe.

Without water, the fish dies.

Without financial stability, many relationships slowly suffocate under the weight of unpaid bills, unemployment, school fees, rent, medical expenses, and constant emotional pressure.

Can Love Survive Poverty?

Yes.

History is full of couples who started with nothing and built everything together.

But history is equally full of marriages destroyed—not because love disappeared—but because financial hardship exhausted patience, trust, and hope.

Many people don't divorce because they stopped loving each other.

They separate because survival became more difficult than romance.

The Dangerous Extreme

Society also teaches another dangerous lesson—that money alone is enough.

It isn't.

A fish cannot survive in polluted water.

Likewise, a relationship filled with wealth but lacking respect, loyalty, honesty, and emotional connection often becomes an expensive prison.

Money can buy a luxurious house.

It cannot buy peace inside it.

Money can organise a magnificent wedding.

It cannot guarantee a lasting marriage.

The Real Lesson

The fish needs water.

But water also becomes meaningless without the fish.

Financial stability creates opportunity.

Love gives that opportunity purpose.

Neither should replace the other.

The healthiest relationships are those where two people build love while also building financial security together.

The Question Society Must Answer

If your child had to choose only one:

Would you advise them to marry someone they truly love but who is financially unstable...

Or someone financially secure whom they do not genuinely love?

There is no universal answer.

But your answer may reveal what you believe truly sustains a relationship.

Perhaps the greatest marriages are not built on choosing between love and money—but on creating a life where both can flourish together.
