🩺 HEPATITIS REMAINS A MAJOR HEALTH BURDEN IN NIGERIA, EXPERT WARNS
Consultant Gastroenterologist at the National Hospital Abuja, Dr. Jamillah Okpatuma, has raised concerns over the persistent burden of hepatitis in Nigeria, attributing it to poor public awareness and inadequate adoption of preventive measures.
Speaking during an interview, Dr. Okpatuma explained that one of the biggest challenges in tackling hepatitis is that many infected individuals do not experience symptoms in the early stages. According to her, the liver has a remarkable ability to continue functioning despite damage, meaning the disease often goes unnoticed until it has progressed significantly.
She emphasized that many Nigerians are unaware that hepatitis can remain asymptomatic for years, delaying diagnosis and treatment. As a result, patients frequently seek medical attention only after severe liver damage has occurred.
Dr. Okpatuma called for increased public education, routine screening, vaccination where applicable, and improved preventive practices to reduce the spread of hepatitis and encourage early detection.
Health experts continue to stress that regular medical check-ups, safe health practices, and greater awareness are essential in the fight against viral hepatitis in Nigeria.
