I will choose Natural Disasters over Leadership Disasters.
John C. Maxwell rightly said "Everything rises and falls on Leadership" Hearing the news of high magnitude natural disasters happening some Asian countries like Japan, Malaysia etc has really gotten me thinking as to why they are not crying for the world to come to their aid? The answer I got was simple' and nothing but "Leadership"
In those countries, when an earthquake strikes, floods destroy communities, drought leads to famine, we call it a natural disaster and it makes headlines over a period of time
But there is another kind of disaster that rarely makes the same headlines, yet leaves even deeper scars and casualties than natural disasters. This is what I refer to as leadership disaster.
The difference between these two disasters is simple.
Natural disasters are beyond human control. But you see that Leadership disasters, they are very much within our control.
A flood may destroy a bridge, good leadership will fix it within weeks as matter of urgency and priority for the people but bad leadership can leave that bridge unrepaired for decades.
A drought may reduce harvests for one season, good leadership will provide a stop gap solution as well as a long term remedy but poor leadership can create policies that keep millions in poverty for generations.
An earthquake may collapse buildings, and good leadership will provide immediate decent relocation for the victims without them feeling the devastating impact but corruption, incompetence, and the absence of vision of leadership can collapse an entire nation.
History has shown that countries hit by devastating natural disasters such as Japan, Indonesia, Chile, Turkey, and others have been able to recover and rebuild because they had leaders who are not a disaster in themselves but were able to mobilize people, planned for recovery, intentional about the welfare of their people, and inspired the hope that made them not to look like what they have passed through.
Sadly, countries blessed with abundant natural resources like my dear nation Nigeria; have remained poor, not because nature failed us, but because leadership failed us and they keep failing us.
Good leadership cannot stop the torrential rains from falling, but it can build drainage systems that will ease the reoccurring floods every year. It cannot prevent drought, but it can invest in irrigation and food security. It cannot stop a disease outbreak, but it can strengthen healthcare before a crisis arrives.
All I am trying to say is simple, good leadership reduces the impact of natural disasters, while bad leadership is a disaster in itself, and creates other disasters where none existed.
The greatest tragedy for any nation is not a hurricane, an earthquake, or a flood. The greatest tragedy is having leaders who lack integrity, competence, compassion, and the courage to put the people's interests above their own.
I will recall what John C. Maxwell said again " Everything rises and falls on leadership" then I will add my own to that and say "A nation can recover from a natural disaster. Recovering from years of poor leadership is often far more difficult because the damage is not only to roads and buildings, it is to institutions, the economy, public trust, and the hopes of an entire generation and even generations unborn"
Do you have your PVC? That is why every election matters, this 2027 election matters because we must not validate leadership disasters with our votes.
Let me borrow the phrase "I ashuwa you" from baba Buhari to re-echo that; the quality of leadership a nation chooses today determines the quality of life its people will live tomorrow.
