If we're just dating without any commitment toward marriage, then whatever I choose to give you is a gift, and I won't ask for it back.

But if we're engaged with a mutual agreement to get married, and you decide to end the relationship, I believe I have the right to recover what I invested in building our future together.

I won't go the extra mile for a casual relationship, but I'll gladly give more than my best to the person I've committed to marrying.
