Nigeria has officially launched a nationwide digital birth and death registration system as the National Population Commission (NPC) seeks to tackle the country's low civil registration rates. While about five million babies are born annually, only 57% of births are registered, with death registration remaining below 20%, leaving millions without legal identity and limiting accurate national data for planning. Through the new E-CRVS platform and over 4,000 registration centres nationwide-set to expand to 8,000-the NPC says the initiative will modernise registration, improve data integrity and support evidence-based governance under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
