$1.2 MILLION IN WASHINGTON. AND A RETAINER IN CAMEROON.
Atiku Abubakar is running two campaigns at once.
The first one has paperwork. In March, a Washington firm called Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C. signed a 12-month contract to protect and strengthen his "reputational standing" in the United States (TheCable) $1.2 million, payable in six instalments (PRNigeria) . On paper: polish the brand, brief the congressmen, tidy up the CV for Washington.
In practice? The firm has been knocking on every door from Capitol Hill to the White House and not to burnish Atiku's image. It says it has handed over 60-plus pages of DOJ documents on a 1993 forfeiture case involving President Tinubu to Trump administration officials and congressional staff. (The Nigerian Voice)
That is not a campaign to win the ballot. That is a campaign to make sure the other man never gets on it.
The second campaign has no FARA filing. No invoice. No paper trail. Just the famed Cameroonian marabouts on what the gist says is a very long retainership, with one very specific brief: deliver the presidential medal.
So Nigeria should be asking:
If the man is destined to rule, why does he need $1.2 million in Washington?
And if $1.2 million in Washington can do the job what exactly are the marabouts collecting for?
One of them is not telling the truth. Possibly both.
Either way, the die is cast. 🎲
