"I DISLIKE NIGERIAN POLITICS … BUT This Made Me Give Tinubu His Flowers 🌹"
Those in my circle know: if there's one thing I dislike, it's Nigerian politics. I don't even join the discussion. In the voice of “Moses” from “VISA ON ARRIVAL”; I hate it, I reject it, I detest it, don't even bring it near me 😁.
I'd rather we all spend ourselves building our communities , as long as it's not at the expense of your spouse and children. Build your home first, then build everyone and everything you have the capacity to build.
But this one made me pause.
Watching Arise News, I saw Governor Alex Otti speak about how intellectually sound President Tinubu's policy steps have been, urging support for them. And for the first time in a while, I had to give Tinubu his flowers.
Not because of what Otti said , No, but because of “how” he got there. A strategic alliance I genuinely thought was impossible.
Here's why this struck me:
I first noticed Otti during the controversial 2023 Abia State governorship collation, when Professor Nnenna Oti stood her ground against every financial inducement and intimidation thrown her way. I was wowed 😳‼️because that told me Otti surrounds himself with people of integrity. Show me your friends, and I'll tell you who you are.🤷🏻♂️
Fast forward to October 2024 — Otti came to Harvard for a seminar titled "RESTORING FAITH IN NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY: NEW PATHS TO GUARANTEED OUTCOMES “, courtesy of my husband (whose passion for politics is actually how we ended up together — story for another day 😄). Governor Alex Otti’s ideas were mind-blowing.
Back home, I saw he wasn't just talk. The public school he built in his state ; fully equipped, run like an elementary school in “obodo oyinbo” ,My‼️, this proved HE’S AN INTENTIONAL DOER, NOT JUST AN INTELLECTUAL TALKER.
Here's A MAN IN A RELATIVELY LOW-VISIBILITY PARTY, QUIETLY DOING HIGH-VISIBILITY WORK. I assumed maybe it was about raising his party's profile.
Then I heard him defend Tinubu's 2023 economic reforms ; backing the removal of the petrol subsidy and the naira float as courageous, necessary steps to free up revenue for infrastructure over consumption.
And I thought: Tinubu just found himself another Fashola.
Otti hasn't said a word about decamping. But standing firmly behind Tinubu's policies? That says enough.
How does this man do it? 🤷🏻♂️
I doff my cap. President Tinubu deserves his flowers.
DO YOU THINK ALLIANCES LIKE THIS ARE STRATEGY, CONVICTION OR BOTH🤷🏻♂️❓
