Nigeria’s net foreign liability position widened by US$7.5bn to US$90.2bn in 2025, as foreign claims on domestic assets grew faster than Nigerian investments abroad. The increase reflected higher portfolio and direct investment liabilities, partly offset by stronger reserve assets and increased Nigerian holdings abroad.

While the rise in foreign investment supported external liquidity and exchange-rate stability, the concentration of portfolio flows in high-yield debt securities leaves the economy more exposed to changes in global interest rates and investor sentiment.

Sustaining the improvement in Nigeria’s external position will require a larger share of long-term direct investment, stronger export earnings and continued reserve accumulation.
