Greetings Tyla, we hope you are well. 240 million Nigerians are writing to you as Nigerian who cares deeply about unity, dignity, and the safety of all Africans. Our intention is not to attack you personally, but to express a concern shared by many Nigerians during this period of heightened tension.
There is growing pain and frustration among Nigerians regarding the repeated xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Many of us feel unheard, especially when South African leaders and institutions describe Nigerians and other Africans as people who "steal jobs" or threaten livelihoods. This narrative has caused real harm, including loss of life, displacement, and long-term trauma.
Because of this, many Nigerians are calling for a peaceful boycott of your scheduled concert in Lagos. Their message is simple: until South Africa addresses xenophobia and protects all Africans within its borders, South African artists should pause performances across Nigeria and the wider African continent.
Nigeria is home to more than 240 million people. We are not xenophobic. We are loving, welcoming, and empathetic. Our challenge has always been leadership, not hatred. We embrace South Africans who come here peacefully, including those married to Nigerians. They are welcome, respected, and safe as long as they follow our laws.
The world is watching South Africa closely. Several countries have expressed concern about xenophobic violence, and many Nigerians feel that African unity cannot be built while such attacks continue.
For this reason, we kindly ask that you reconsider performing in Nigeria or any of the 54 African countries at this time. This is not out of hostility toward you, but out of solidarity with Africans who have suffered. Music is powerful, but so is the message we send when we choose where and when to perform.
Africa deserves leaders with integrity, courage, and compassion—leaders who protect African children and build unity instead of division. We all must do better and love one another.
