Oshiomhole: Emefiele’s Naira Redesign Policy Helped Obi Defeat Tinubu in Lagos.
The lawmaker representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has claimed that the naira redesign policy introduced under former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, contributed to Peter Obi’s victory over President Bola Tinubu in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on TVC, Oshiomhole argued that the cash scarcity crisis caused by the policy created widespread anger against the then-ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, the frustration Nigerians experienced while trying to access their money, coupled with fuel scarcity and long queues at banks and filling stations, influenced voters’ decisions.
Oshiomhole said the situation “produced” Obi’s strong performance, adding that many voters used their ballots to express their dissatisfaction with the APC-led government at the time.
He recalled that many Nigerians struggled to withdraw cash, with some spending nights in queues at ATMs and POS centres just to get small amounts of money.
The former Edo governor stated that the anger generated by the policy was a major factor behind APC’s loss of support in Lagos, allowing Peter Obi to defeat Tinubu in the state.
