Equal Security for Every Presidential Candidate Is a Constitutional Imperative

The decision of the Federal High Court to hear the suit seeking adequate security for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections underscores an important constitutional principle: every Nigerian, regardless of political affiliation, is entitled to the protection of life and personal security. The acceptance of the case for hearing does not determine its outcome, but it provides an opportunity for the courts to clarify the obligations of the state in safeguarding democratic participation.

A healthy democracy cannot thrive where opposition candidates, ruling party candidates, or independent candidates are exposed to intimidation, violence, or insecurity because of their political activities. Free and fair elections require more than the right to vote—they require an environment where candidates can campaign peacefully, engage citizens openly, and present their visions without fear of attacks or threats.

If Nigeria is committed to strengthening its democracy, then state security institutions must act with professionalism, impartiality, and fairness. Their constitutional duty is to protect all citizens equally, not to discriminate based on political party or ideology. Equal protection under the law is one of the cornerstones of constitutional democracy.

This principle extends beyond Peter Obi. Every legitimate presidential candidate should receive appropriate security protection based on credible risk assessments and established legal standards. Such protection should never be viewed as a political favor but as a constitutional responsibility that promotes peaceful elections, public confidence, and national stability.

Ultimately, the issue before the court is larger than any individual politician. It concerns the integrity of Nigeria's democratic institutions and the assurance that political competition can occur without violence or fear. Regardless of political preferences, every Nigerian should support a system where all candidates are protected equally, citizens are free to participate peacefully in the democratic process, and elections are decided by the ballot—not by intimidation or insecurity.
