His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex C. Otti , OFR, on Monday received the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics, Prof. James A. Robinson, alongside a delegation of distinguished scholars from leading universities in the United States.
The team, led by former Minister of Education and Health, Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor to explore opportunities for knowledge exchange, research collaboration and policy engagement.
Governor Otti congratulated Prof. Robinson on his Nobel Prize and described development economics as the branch of the discipline that directly addresses the quality of people's lives. He explained that his administration places greater emphasis on policies that reduce poverty, expand opportunities and improve productivity rather than pursuing economic figures that have little impact on ordinary citizens.
Governor Otti observed that growth statistics alone cannot define progress if they fail to improve the welfare of the people. He said governments must deliberately tackle the root causes of poverty by investing in productive sectors, creating an environment where businesses can flourish and equipping citizens with the skills and capacity to benefit from available opportunities.
The Governor also expressed his readiness to work closely with Prof. Robinson and the visiting academics on research, policy development and institutional partnerships that would contribute to Abia's long term development agenda.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Prof. James A. Robinson of the University of Chicago said he looked forward to learning more about the development initiatives unfolding in Abia and contributing ideas from global research and experience. Prof. Leander Heldring of Northwestern University, United States of America praised the reforms taking place in the State, while Prof. Chima Korie of Marquette University, United States remarked that Abia's progress offers hope that purposeful leadership can change the Nigerian story.
Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike described Abia as an emerging reference point for prudent economic management and explained that the visit was designed to deepen cooperation between the State and the international academic community.
The President of the Abia State Leadership Academy (ASLA), Prof. Kenneth Kalu, while speaking , said the Academy, established by Governor Otti, is focused on producing principled leaders with the competence and values required for public service.
The meeting was attended by some members of the State Executive Council, including
the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba , PhD.
