1st John 2:1 My little children, these things write I to you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: Vs 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
This refers to Believers. Jesus is our Advocate with the Father when we sin, so the Holy Ghost knew that sons of God would sin.
Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: Vs 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
God's communication was in dark speeches to Moses. We will find truths hidden in symbols like the tree, the serpent, the fruit etc. You won't find sin. That means sin was symbolized by the eating of tree of knowledge of good and evil. Life was present there as the tree of life which is symbolic.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Vs 2 The same was in the beginning with God. Vs 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. Vs 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
In Jesus is life. In Genesis, there was a mixture of symbols and reality.
Sin entered the world in Genesis 3, but the very first time sin was mentioned in bible lexicon is Genesis 4.
Genesis 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
The word *sin*; in the text above refers to sin offering. Abel just offered an offering before God. Sin was first mentioned when Cain was about to kill his brother.
Why was Cain angry?
Genesis 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: Vs 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
This is prior to the first manifestation of Sin. Who was he angry at? Was he angry against Abel for offering a good offering?
1st John 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Vs 12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
What works were evil, and what works were righteous?
Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
Abel's work was faith. Cain's work were his works. Abel received God's redemptive promise. Cain came by his own merits.
Faith was based on how they came to God. Abel by faith, Cain by his own merits. Notice that, the sin was present before the murder. In Cain, unbelief presented itself as self-righteousness. In Abel, faith presented itself as righteousness via the works of another. Hatred is a child of self righteousness. The mother of hatred is self righteousness. Self-righteousness is the manifestation of unbelief.
There was self-righteousness because of unbelief. They knew man should not come to God by merit because God covered their parents with offering (animal in Genesis 3). Cain killed Abel. Cain had hatred for the truth.
John 8:44 Ye are of your father the demon, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. Vs 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
In previous verses, Jesus referred to their unbelief. Abel was justified by faith in offering the sacrifice, and Cain was not justified because his sacrifice was in unbelief. Unbelief is the mother of self-righteousness. Sin's first manifestation in Genesis 4 is seen in self-righteousness. Don’t forget that both of them were sinners.
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Vs 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Vs 14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
Everyone that exercises faith in the blood is declared righteous. No one can score points with God.
