Most candidates think the interview begins when the panel chair says, "So, tell us about yourself."
It doesn't. It begins the moment you walk into the building.
This isn't a motivational line. It's how Values-Based Recruitment actually plays out in practice. The panel will ask you about dignity, about person-centred care, about treating people with respect under pressure, and before you've answered a single question, they've already quietly registered whether you greeted the receptionist, how you treated the healthcare assistant who collected you from the waiting room, whether you looked composed or visibly unravelling.
Here's what the five minutes before your interview should actually look like.
Arrive fifteen minutes early, not five. Five isn't enough time to settle. Fifteen gives you room to shift from the version of you that was anxious on the journey into the version that walks in like a professional who belongs there.
Put your notes away. If you're still reading in the waiting area, that window has closed, and it's adding pressure, not reducing it. Sit with your thoughts instead. Breathe deliberately, four counts in, hold four, four counts out. It's a simple technique, but it genuinely settles a racing heart rate before you need to be at your calmest.
When someone collects you, engage immediately. Eye contact, their name if you catch it, a genuine thank you. Four seconds that quietly tell everyone watching that you're someone who sees people.
When you enter the room, don't sit until invited. Meet each panel member's eye. Introduce yourself properly: "Good morning, I'm [name], here for the Band [X] post. Thank you for having me." Fifteen seconds that say composed, professional, and that you understand an introduction isn't a formality.
One more thing worth carrying in with you: the panel isn't your enemy. Many international clinicians walk in believing the room is there to find reasons to say no. It isn't. The NHS is short-staffed, and everyone in that room genuinely wants to find someone they can offer the role to.
Walk in like someone who already knows that.
Got an interview in the next 30 days and want to walk in with all of this, not just the theory of it? DM me "READY" and let's talk about what preparation looks like for your specific situation.
11AM: the question you didn't prepare for, and the four seconds that decide whether it costs you the offer.
