Nigeria's Senators Should Hang Their Heads in Shame

Nigeria deserves better.

Our senators should hang their heads in shame. While millions of Nigerians struggle to afford food, education, healthcare, and decent housing, the controversies surrounding the 2026 budget have once again exposed a disturbing pattern of misplaced priorities and weak oversight.

The latest debate over allocations for church and mosque projects has raised serious questions about accountability, transparency, and the true needs of the people. Whether these expenditures are justified or not, the fact that they dominate public discussion while poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and inflation continue to worsen reflects a disconnect between many elected officials and the citizens they were chosen to serve.

There is an old saying: every day may belong to the thief, but one day belongs to the owner. Public office is a public trust, and sooner or later, those entrusted with the nation's resources will be judged by history and by the people.

Nigeria's democracy belongs to Nigerians—not to politicians. Citizens have both the right and the responsibility to demand integrity, transparency, and leadership that puts the public interest first. If the current leadership fails to meet those expectations, the ballot box remains the most powerful tool for peaceful change.

The time has come for Nigerians to reclaim their country—not through violence or division, but through informed civic engagement, accountability, and the determination to elect leaders who truly serve the people.
