🩸 What Is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. Instead of being round and flexible, the red blood cells become hard, sticky, and shaped like a sickle (or crescent moon).

These sickle-shaped cells can block blood flow, reducing the amount of oxygen that reaches different parts of the body. This can lead to severe pain, anaemia, frequent infections, and damage to organs if not properly managed.

SCD is not contagious—you cannot catch it from another person. It is passed from parents to their children through genes.

Although there is no universal cure, early diagnosis, regular medical care, and healthy lifestyle habits can help people living with SCD live long, productive, and fulfilling lives.
