As Oranmiyan grew, stories of his bravery spread across the land. He was not only a skilled warrior but also a wise leader. Many believed he would become one of the greatest rulers in history.
One day, the people of a neighboring kingdom invited Oranmiyan to become their king. They hoped his wisdom and courage would unite their land.
Oranmiyan accepted and ruled with fairness. However, after some time, he realized that many of the local chiefs refused to support him because they saw him as an outsider. Every decision he made was questioned, and peace became difficult to maintain.
Instead of using force to silence his critics, Oranmiyan made a remarkable decision.
He gathered the elders and said:
"A kingdom cannot prosper where trust does not exist. A ruler without the full confidence of his people cannot bring lasting peace."
Rather than cling to power, he stepped down voluntarily and returned to his Yoruba homeland.
Back home, Oranmiyan later became one of the founders of the mighty Oyo Empire, which would grow into one of the most powerful and influential kingdoms in West African history. Under his leadership and that of his successors, Oyo became famous for its disciplined cavalry, thriving trade, and strong system of government.
His legacy teaches a timeless lesson:
True leadership is not about holding onto power at all costs. It is about knowing when honor, unity, and the well-being of the people matter more than a throne.

A great leader is measured not only by the battles they win but also by the wisdom to choose peace, integrity, and the greater good over personal ambition.
