Former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, has urged INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, to prioritise the conduct of free, fair and credible elections, arguing that electoral integrity is the strongest safeguard against impunity within political parties. While supporting INEC’s call for greater internal democracy, Okechukwu said political parties are more likely to respect democratic principles and present widely accepted candidates when they have confidence in the transparency of the electoral process.

He also dismissed allegations by some opposition parties that INEC favours the ruling APC, insisting that credible elections are in the interest of all political parties and essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, improving governance and enhancing the legitimacy of elected leaders.
