In 1989, while serving a 30-year prison sentence in Kirikiri for cocaine trafficking, Kingsley Eze requested permission to withdraw ₦10,000 from his frozen bank account.

His request was rejected twice until he allegedly struck a deal to give the prison's chief superintendent a share of the money.

On the day of the withdrawal, Kingsley was taken to the bank in an ambulance, escorted by a warder and a welfare officer, who reportedly remained outside to avoid attracting suspicion.

Inside the bank, the manager initially refused to honour the withdrawal because of Kingsley's legal troubles. Kingsley, however, convinced him that the matter had been resolved.

Instead of withdrawing the agreed ₦10,000, he withdrew ₦13,000 and allegedly gave the warder, welfare officer and ambulance driver ₦100 each.

Back at Kirikiri Prison, he officially declared ₦10,000 at the gate but secretly handed the remaining ₦2,700 to the warder, asking him to return it later inside the prison.

The plan collapsed when the warder allegedly kept the money for himself and insisted Kingsley had withdrawn only ₦10,000. Kingsley then exposed their arrangement, and a search reportedly uncovered the ₦2,700 on the warder.

Prime People reported: "The chief superintendent threatened to pay the money to the government treasury. What particularly annoyed him was that the convict wanted to outsmart him. The incident is now being investigated at the prison's headquarters.”
