Niels Henrik Abel (1802–1829) was a Norwegian mathematician whose extraordinary brilliance transformed algebra and mathematical analysis despite his remarkably short life.

By the age of 26, he had made groundbreaking discoveries, most notably proving that there is no general algebraic solution by radicals for polynomial equations of degree five or higher, a result that reshaped algebra and paved the way for Galois theory.

Abel also made pioneering contributions to elliptic functions, Abelian functions, infinite series, and the theory of convergence, laying foundations for modern complex analysis and algebraic geometry.

Although he died in poverty before his genius was widely recognized, his work profoundly influenced generations of mathematicians, and the prestigious Abel Prize, one of the world's highest honors in mathematics, was established in his memory to celebrate outstanding achievements in the field.
