"I'm a collaborative leader who values every team member's contribution."

The panel smiles. Writes a 2 out of 4. Moves to the next question.

Here's the part almost nobody prepares for: NHS panels don't score leadership answers on vibe. They score them against a specific, documented framework, and if your answer doesn't touch its language, you score below threshold no matter how strong your real leadership experience is.

That framework is the NHS Healthcare Leadership Model, developed by the NHS Leadership Academy, and it names nine dimensions expected of every NHS employee: inspiring shared purpose, leading with care, evaluating information, connecting our service, sharing the vision, engaging the team, holding to account, developing capability, influencing for results.

You don't need to recite these by name in the room. But a genuinely strong answer will quietly evidence two or three of them without you announcing it.

Here's the same experience, told two ways.

Score 2: "I'm a collaborative leader who values every team member's contribution."

Score 4: "When I was appointed Team Leader, agency staff turnover was hurting continuity of care. I held a short team meeting, not to assign blame but to find the real cause, and discovered new staff weren't being properly inducted into our documentation system. I redesigned the induction checklist, introduced a buddy system for each new starter's first three shifts, and agency usage dropped 30% within six weeks. I presented the result to the Ward Manager, and it was adopted trust-wide."

Same leader. Same ward. A completely different score, because the second answer evidences developing capability, holding to account, engaging the team and evaluating information, with a number attached.

Have you ever led even a small change on your ward that helped your patients or your team? Drop one line below, I'll help you turn it into a Band 6 answer.

If your interview date is close, don't wait on a comment thread to prepare this properly. DM me "HLM" and let's build your leadership answer against the real framework.

11AM: the management question that quietly tells a panel whether you're Band 5 or Band 6, and it isn't about a difficult colleague this time.
