There's a moment in every NHS interview above Band 5 where the panel quietly stops listening to your clinical answer.
They've already decided you're safe. Now they're deciding something else entirely.
And it's exactly here that some of the most experienced, most clinically capable candidates I've worked with start losing marks, not because they can't lead, but because nobody ever told them the NHS doesn't treat leadership as a job title.
It treats it as a behaviour. Expected from your very first shift.
The NMC Code requires every registered nurse to provide leadership and demonstrate professional values, regardless of grade. And the NHS Leadership Academy's Healthcare Leadership Model applies its nine leadership dimensions to every employee, not just the ones with "manager" somewhere in their title.
So when a Band 5 panel asks a leadership question, they're not asking if you've run a team. They're asking whether you understand that escalating a concern through the right channel, mentoring a struggling colleague, or making a clinical call under pressure already counts.
When a Band 6 or 7 panel asks the same question, the bar moves. Now they want evidence, with outcomes, with impact on your team, that you've already been doing this.
Today I'm giving you the full framework, at every band, from Band 5 through Band 7.
What's your target band, and your specialty? Tell me below, and I'll tell you the specific leadership dimension your panel is likely to weight hardest.
Interview already on the calendar? Don't leave this one to chance. DM me "LEADERSHIP" and let's build your band-specific answers properly.
9AM: the exact scoring model most candidates have never even heard of, and why using its language changes your score.
