Part 5: Brothers in the Dark
The heavy oak front door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash. Armed soldiers in combat gear flooded the dining room, their rifles raised and flashlights cutting through the dust. The commanding officer marched in, his eyes locking instantly onto Buba. But as his gaze swept the room, a cruel, victorious smile crossed his face. He spotted Yemi standing by the table. A double prize for the new regime.
"Secure them both," the officer barked.
Hauwa and Bukola screamed as soldiers grabbed their husbands, forcing their arms behind their backs. In that final, terrifying chaos, as the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked shut, Buba and Yemi locked eyes.
The PFP and the IPP were gone. The titles meant nothing. The purple IPP cap fell to the floor, trampled by a combat boot. In the shadow of total ruin, the political masks dissolved, leaving only the two boys from the dorm room.
Buba strained against the guard, reaching out his hand. Yemi did the same. Their fingers met, locking into their old university handshake—a silent, powerful apology passing between them in a single grip.
As they were being aggressively shoved toward the door, Yemi planted his feet, looking directly at the commanding officer. "If you are taking us, put us in the same vehicle. And the same cell."
Buba stepped up, his shoulder pressing firmly against Yemi's, his voice steadier than it had been in sixteen years. "We started our journey together. We will face the end of it together."
The soldiers aggressively marched them out into the stormy night, leaving their wives weeping but fiercely holding onto one another. Outside, the two old friends walked side-by-side toward the waiting military van—no longer enemies, but brothers united against an uncertain dark.
