Part 4: The Thunderclap

​The argument reached its absolute peak. Veins bulged on Buba’s neck as he stepped forward, his hand raised, ready to physically rip the IPP cap from Yemi’s head. Yemi stood his ground, fists clenched.
​Then, the universe flinched.
​The power cut out completely.
​A sudden, pitch-black darkness swallowed the room. The roaring shouting match died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, dead silence. The only sound was the heavy, ragged breathing of four terrified people.
​A few agonizing seconds later, the house’s heavy backup generator groaned to life. The overhead lights flickered back on, dim and sterile. In the corner, the television screen blared with harsh static before cutting to a bleak, grey screen displaying the state seal. Solemn, rhythmic martial music echoed through the room.
​A stern, heavily decorated military General stepped into the frame, his voice devoid of emotion. "The constitution is suspended. Parliament is dissolved. A nationwide dawn-to-dusk curfew is effective immediately. All political party chairmen are ordered to surrender to the nearest military post for questioning."
​The petty argument about the hat vanished into nothingness. The grand political empires they had built were wiped out by a single broadcast. Before anyone could draw a breath, the terrifying roar of heavy military trucks shattered the night outside. Powerful searchlights pierced through the dining room windows, sweeping across their pale, shocked faces. They were surrounded.
