There Was This Outcry From Northerners That Kwankwaso Was Selling Us to the Igbos- Najaatu

The Deputy National Chairman (North West) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hajia Najaatu Mohammed, has spoken about the political journey of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, saying his latest party move reflects growing dissatisfaction in the North and has also affected how many people view his supporters.

Speaking in an interview published by The Sun Nigeria on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Najaatu said many people in the North saw his decision to leave the ADC and join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a sign that regional political interests were being surrendered.

According to her, the situation became more controversial when some of Kwankwaso's supporters responded to criticism with remarks that referenced sensitive historical figures and events.

Najaatu said, "What made it very bad for him was that having left the ADC and he went to the NDC , there was this outcry from Northerners that he was selling us to the Igbo, that Igbos killed Sarduna. But instead of him just keeping quiet on this, he now got his followers to be saying a lot of things. And then, they started insulting Uthman Dan Fodio."

Kwankwaso's recent political journey began earlier in 2026. After contesting the 2023 presidential election as the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), he resigned from the party in late March.

On March 30, he officially joined the ADC during a ceremony in Kano attended by several opposition figures, including Peter Obi.

Following his defection to the ADC, Kwankwaso gained significant influence through the Kwankwasiyya movement, particularly in Kano State, where the party's structures were largely reorganised in favour of his political camp.

However, the alliance did not last long. As legal battles and leadership disputes within the ADC continued to threaten the party's ability to participate effectively in future elections, Kwankwaso and Obi left the party in early May.

Both politicians later joined the NDC, where Obi emerged as the party's presidential candidate for the 2027 election, while Kwankwaso was named his running mate.
