Tinubu Stood Up and Said That Everybody Was Borrowing and So He Would Borrow and Borrow- Najaatu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Deputy National Chairman for the North West, Hajia Najaatu Mohammed, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration of relying heavily on borrowing without adequate accountability on how the funds are being used.

Speaking in an interview published by The Sun Nigeria on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Najaatu recalled that at the beginning of his political campaign, Tinubu had spoken about borrowing, saying that since countries were taking loans, Nigeria would also continue to borrow.

However, she questioned the impact of the government's borrowing and revenue generation on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

According to her, the government has continued to generate huge revenues through agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service and following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

"On the day that the Presidential Campaign Council was inaugurated (when I was in APC), Tinubu stood up and said that everybody was borrowing and so he would borrow and borrow and borrow. These were his words from inception. The next question to ask is where is all the money going? The administration said it is making billions or trillions from internal revenue (from Customs, etc) and it removed fuel subsidies," Najaatu said.

Despite these increased revenues, she said Nigerians were yet to see corresponding improvements in their living conditions.

Najaatu also alleged that reports of the misappropriation of public funds by senior government officials had further raised concerns about the management of the country's finances.

The debate over Nigeria's borrowing has also been a major issue for opposition figures, including Peter Obi.

Obi emphasized that borrowing is not necessarily wrong when the funds are invested in productive projects capable of generating revenue and supporting economic growth.

He also raised concerns that too much of the borrowed money and government revenue is being spent on recurrent expenses and other areas that do not directly improve the economy.

Despite the criticisms, President Tinubu has defended his administration’s decision to borrow when necessary, saying borrowing should not automatically be viewed as a negative practice.

The President maintained that taking loans could be justified if the government used them for the benefit of the people and worked hard to repay them.
