2027: I Can Bet You My Life, Obi Can't Make it in the North. Those That Even Voted for Him in the Last Election Were Igbos- Najaatu
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Deputy National Chairman for the North West, Hajia Najaatu Mohammed, has questioned the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi’s ability to attract substantial support outside the Southeast ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview published by The Sun Nigeria on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Najaatu argued that much of Obi's backing in the North during the 2023 presidential election came mainly from Igbo residents living in the region.
"Obi cannot go beyond the Southeast. I can bet you my life. Obi cannot make it in the North. Those that even voted for Obi in the last election were the Igbo that settled in the North," Najaatu said.
However, Obi’s performance in the 2023 election showed that his support was not limited to the Southeast.
The former Anambra State governor performed strongly in several southern states and urban centres across the country.
He also secured notable victories in strategic locations, including Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory, where he defeated the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
His performance in the core northern states, however, was considerably weaker.
Although Obi secured the constitutionally required 25 per cent of votes in some states across the North-Central and other mixed regions, his overall vote count in much of the Northwest and Northeast remained relatively low.
The regional gap has become an important factor in preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
Obi has now chosen former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his vice presidential candidate.
The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket brings together Obi’s strong support among young and urban voters, particularly in the South, with Kwankwaso’s established political base and influence in the North.
