I've come to realize that PAIN, BITTERNESS, ANGER and ACTION are not the same thing. They may exist in sequence but each is distinct and deserves to be understood on its own. Pain is real, bitterness is real, anger is real. To acknowledge them is not to excuse them, it is simply to recognize them for what they are.
What I have come to believe is this: we are ultimately responsible for our actions. Our actions reveal our character, regardless of what fuels them. This is not an easy truth. It is one that challenges all of us. Pain may explain why we feel a certain way, bitterness may explain why our hearts harden and anger may explain the intensity of our emotions but none of them removes our responsibility for what we choose to do next.
Perhaps that is why it is important to separate these experiences before we connect them. When we understand each one in isolation, we are better able to see how one can lead to another and more importantly, where we still have the opportunity to choose a different path.
Too often, actions born from unresolved pain, nurtured bitterness and unchecked anger create wounds far greater than the ones that started the journey. The sequence may begin beyond our control, but it does not have to end beyond our responsibility. Somewhere between what happens to us and what we do because of it lies the space where character is formed.......

Real maturity begins when we learn to separate those internal states from our external choices
