Most people think malaria only causes fever and body weakness. But did you know that in some cases, malaria can affect the brain?

This severe form is called cerebral malaria, and it is most commonly caused by Plasmodium falciparum—the deadliest malaria parasite. It happens when infected red blood cells block tiny blood vessels in the brain, reducing blood flow and causing inflammation.

A person with cerebral malaria may develop a very high fever, become confused, have repeated seizures, lose consciousness, or even slip into a coma.

Cerebral malaria is a medical emergency. Early diagnosis and immediate treatment in a hospital can save lives and reduce the risk of permanent brain damage.

Don't ignore severe malaria symptoms. Prompt treatment can make all the difference.
