Panenka Recalls the Penalty That Made Him a National Hero

Antonin Panenka has reflected on the iconic penalty that immortalised his name in football history, admitting the stakes could not have been higher.

"If I'd missed that penalty, they might have sent me down a mine for 50 years. Instead I became a national hero," the former Czechoslovakia international said of his decisive spot-kick against West Germany.

The chipped, down-the-middle penalty — now universally known as "the Panenka" — has since been replicated by some of the world's greatest players and remains one of football's most recognisable moments.
