Rodents such as rats and mice can cause expensive damage by chewing electrical wires, insulation, hoses, and even nesting inside the engine bay. Here are some practical ways to keep them away from your car:
1. Keep the engine bay clean
Remove leaves, food crumbs, and debris.
Clean up any spilled engine fluids that may attract animals.
2. Avoid parking near rodent habitats
Stay away from tall grass, bushes, garbage dumps, and stored firewood when possible.
If parking for a long time, choose a clean, open area.
3. Drive the car regularly
Cars left unused for weeks are more attractive to rodents looking for shelter.
4. Use rodent repellents
Place rodent repellent sachets or peppermint oil-soaked cotton balls around (not directly on hot engine parts).
Commercial rodent sprays designed for engine compartments are also effective.
5. Seal food sources
Never leave snacks, pet food, or rubbish inside the vehicle.
6. Clean the interior regularly.
Use traps around the parking area
If you park in a garage, place rat traps around the perimeter (away from children and pets).
