No Governor Has Power To Suspend NURTW, MC Oluomo Tells Adeleke

The leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has pushed back against the Osun State Government's decision to halt the union's activities, arguing that the state lacks the legal authority to impose such a restriction.

The dispute arose after Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered the suspension of all NURTW operations in motor parks across Osun State. The directive followed a meeting of the State Security Council, which reviewed the security situation in the state.

The government also instructed the police to prevent the union from collecting levies in motor parks and directed security agencies to apprehend anyone claiming to act as an NURTW official while the order remains in effect.

Responding on Friday at the union's national secretariat in Abuja, NURTW National President Musiliu Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo, through the Deputy National President, Aliyu Ore, maintained that the union is a national body created under the law and cannot be suspended by any state government.

The union's leadership argued that similar attempts by state governments in the past had been challenged in court, with judicial decisions affirming the NURTW's legal standing.

It insisted that the organisation's operations are governed by national laws rather than directives from individual state administrations.

As the disagreement continues, the NURTW announced the formation of an interim leadership to oversee its affairs in Osun State.

The national body said the move became necessary because the state chapter has been affected by a prolonged internal leadership dispute.

The caretaker committee was inaugurated ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, with the union noting that the step aligns with its responsibilities under a recently signed memorandum of understanding with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Kazeem Oyewale was appointed to head the caretaker committee, while Sunday Oludare will serve as secretary and Lukman Ahmed as treasurer.

Other members include Ismaila Abdurahim, Adebayo Tajudin, Tajudin Akin and Ayinde Mutiu.

The committee is expected to administer the union's affairs in the state until its leadership crisis is fully resolved.
