Many of you voted in today's poll, and I noticed something interesting. Most of us naturally chose based on emotion. Some picked the child because they have their whole life ahead of them. Others chose the pregnant woman because two lives are involved. Some felt the doctor should come first because they can go on to save more lives, while others believed the grandmother deserved the same chance as everyone else.

The truth is that, in a real medical emergency, doctors don't make these decisions based on age, profession, or emotions. They follow a process called triage.

Triage is a system used when resources are limited, such as during disasters or mass casualty incidents. Its purpose is to save as many lives as possible. This means the patient who is treated first is usually the one who is most likely to survive if they receive immediate treatment.

So why isn't it automatically the child? Because being the youngest doesn't necessarily mean they have the best chance of survival. If another patient is more likely to benefit from immediate treatment, that patient may be treated first.

Why not the pregnant woman? Pregnancy alone doesn't guarantee priority. Her condition, the baby's condition, and the likelihood that treatment will be successful are all taken into account.

Why not the doctor? Although healthcare workers play a vital role, they are not automatically treated first simply because of their profession. Their medical condition is assessed just like everyone else's. However, if all patients have the same severity of illness and the same chance of survival, some disaster triage protocols may prioritize the doctor because saving one healthcare worker may allow them to return and save many more lives.

And why not the grandmother? Age alone is never used to decide who deserves treatment. An older adult with a good chance of recovery may be treated before a younger person whose injuries are unlikely to respond to treatment.

At the end of the day, triage is not about deciding whose life is more valuable. Every life has equal worth. It's about making the most effective medical decision in an incredibly difficult situation, with the goal of saving as many lives as possible.
