Diagnosis and Treatment of Malaria
If you think you have malaria, the first thing you should do is visit a health facility for proper testing. Symptoms like fever, headache, chills, and body aches can also be caused by other illnesses, so it is important not to assume every fever is malaria.
Malaria is diagnosed using a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) or by examining a blood sample under a microscope. These tests confirm whether the malaria parasite is present before treatment begins.
Once malaria is confirmed, treatment should start as soon as possible. The recommended treatment is an antimalarial medicine prescribed by a healthcare professional. It is important to complete the full course of medication, even if you begin to feel better after a few doses. Taking plenty of fluids, getting adequate rest, and using medicines such as paracetamol for fever (when appropriate) can also help with recovery.
Avoid self-medicating or relying only on herbal remedies, as this may delay proper treatment and increase the risk of severe malaria. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are the best ways to prevent complications and ensure a full recovery.
