Imagine a woman who warmly greets her neighbour every morning, calling her, “My dear friend.” Yet whenever she is with other neighbours, she spreads false stories, claiming that the woman is dishonest and untrustworthy. Over time, the lies damage the neighbour’s reputation, create suspicion, and divide the community.
Whether she conceals her hatred behind friendly words or expresses it through slander, both actions are equally foolish. They spring from a deceitful heart and cause unnecessary pain and division.
God is concerned not only with the words we speak but also with the condition of our hearts. Genuine love is sincere, truthful, and marked by integrity. Hatred, however, either hides behind deceptive words or reveals itself through slander. Wisdom calls us to cultivate hearts that are honest, gracious, and faithful, so that our words build others up rather than tear them down.
