One of the biggest misconceptions about project management is that success is measured by three things:
โข Was the project delivered on time?
โข Was it within budget?
โข Was the agreed scope completed?
Those are important...But they don't tell the whole story.
I've seen projects that met all three criteria and still failed to create meaningful business value.
I've also seen projects that faced unexpected challenges but ultimately delivered outcomes that transformed how the business operated.

This is why I believe every project manager should understand Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
KPIs help answer questions that schedules and task lists cannot:
โข Are we solving the right problem?
โข Is the project improving customer experience?
โข Are we reducing costs or increasing efficiency?
โข Are stakeholders seeing measurable value?
โข How do we know we've actually succeeded?
Without meaningful KPIs, it's easy to celebrate project completion while missing the impact the project was meant to achieve.
For me, understanding data isn't about building sophisticated dashboards or reporting dozens of metrics.
It's about asking better questions, measuring what matters, and making decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
The role of a project manager is evolving.
Organizations increasingly need professionals who can connect execution with business outcomes, people who understand projects, operations, data, automation, and continuous improvement as parts of the same system...because delivering a project is an achievement.

What KPI do you believe every project manager should pay closer attention to?
