Oyo Assembly Approves Makinde’s Leave, Transfers Executive Powers to Deputy Governor.

The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde's request to proceed on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal set to oversee the affairs of the state throughout the period of the governor's absence.

The approval followed the presentation of a letter from Governor Makinde during Thursday's plenary session of the Assembly. The letter informed lawmakers of his intention to embark on leave from August 10 to September 11, 2026, with official duties expected to resume on September 14.

The governor also requested the transfer of executive authority to the deputy governor in line with constitutional provisions to ensure the uninterrupted administration of government throughout the leave period. The request received unanimous approval from members of the Assembly.

The Deputy Speaker, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, read the governor's correspondence before the House. Lawmakers subsequently endorsed the request, expressing confidence in the deputy governor's ability to provide stable leadership while Governor Makinde is away.

Members of the Assembly urged Lawal to continue supervising the day-to-day administration of the state and ensure that government programmes, policies and public services proceed without disruption. They described the arrangement as a demonstration of institutional continuity and effective governance.

Speaking after the approval, Fadeyi wished Governor Makinde a peaceful and refreshing vacation while reaffirming the legislature's commitment to maintaining cordial relations with the executive arm.

He added that the Assembly remains confident in the state's governance structure and the deputy governor's capacity to sustain ongoing development initiatives until the governor returns to office.
