GIVING TO THE POOR

Galatians 2:10 "Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do."

One of the instructions the Apostles gave was to give to the poor. The poor here is firstly, the poor saints.

We are not to leave poor people in our local church and then go on the streets to give to strangers. We are to do good to all men but particularly to the saints.

Romans 15:26 For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.

The contribution made were for poor saints not for the whole of Jerusalem.

The responsibility a believer has to give to the poor is mainly for the poor saints.

Apostle Paul also instructed to give to Widows but not to those who are younger than 60 years old.

1st Timothy 5:3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
Vs 9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,

There were other criteria to be put into consideration listed in 1st Timothy 5. We are to give to the poor but not to those who are lazy and refuse to work

2nd Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.
Vs 11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

Anyone that does not work should not eat. We are not to support lazy folks.

This is in exception to those who by circumstances can’t work or do not have at all.
The motivation for our giving is love. We must give out of love.

1st Corinthians 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

It is possible to give without love, we are self centered when we give without having love as our motivation.

*Confession: I let the love of God motivate my giving always.*
