THE EXPERIENCE RECOGNITION CONVERSATION

A nurse with nine years of ICU experience was offered a Band 5 entry point. She accepted it. Months later, she learned colleagues with comparable experience had started higher — because they asked a question she didn't know to ask.

The question: "Can my post-registration clinical experience from outside the UK be recognised in determining my starting pay point under Agenda for Change?"

Pay progression under Agenda for Change is based on years of experience within a band, and Trusts have discretion in how they apply this to experience gained outside the NHS. The framework for recognising equivalent experience exists — but in practice, it's the candidate's responsibility to raise it and provide the evidence.

What actually makes this conversation land, rather than get dismissed, is evidence. Not a verbal statement of years worked. A structured, written summary of your clinical experience that maps it against UK-equivalent competency levels — the complexity of patients managed, the governance frameworks you worked within, the level of independent decision-making involved.

This is exactly what I help build with clients before offer stage. Not a complaint about pay. A clear, professional evidence submission that gives an HR team something concrete to work with — because without it, even a genuinely sympathetic manager has little to act on.

The nurses who start at a higher point aren't the ones who asked loudest. They're the ones who asked with evidence.
