THE ENTRY POINT DECISION
Most international nurses accept the first salary figure on their offer letter. Many have never been told that figure can, in some circumstances, be discussed — and that years of clinical experience could move it before you sign.
Under the 2026/27 NHS Agenda for Change pay structure, Band 5 runs from £32,073 to £39,043. Band 6 runs from £39,959 to £48,117. These are national scales, not fixed entry points for every individual — they're starting positions within a framework most international clinicians don't realise has some flexibility built in.
Here's what's genuinely worth knowing: Agenda for Change allows Trusts discretion to recognise relevant prior clinical experience when setting your starting pay point within a band. If you have several years of post-registration experience from your home country — in emergency care, theatres, ICU, or a specialist unit — that experience doesn't automatically count for nothing once you're in the UK. Whether and how much a Trust recognises it varies, and it generally requires you to ask, and to be able to evidence that experience clearly.
The clinicians I work with don't accept an offer without first understanding what it reflects. We look at whether international experience has been properly considered, and where it hasn't, we build a clear, evidenced case before any contract is signed.
Your experience has value. Make sure the conversation happens before you sign, not after.
💬 Not sure whether your international experience should factor into your starting salary? Comment FLOOR and I'll send you the NHS Salary Assessment Guide.
