Gavi and Fabián Ruiz receive 150kg of tomatoes in hometown World Cup tribute

Spanish midfielders Fabián Ruiz and Gavi have been honoured with a unique tradition after helping Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup — receiving tomatoes equivalent to their body weight from their hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca, a town south of Seville with fewer than 40,000 residents.

The pair returned on Wednesday, July 22, for an official town hall reception where they stepped onto weighing scales to determine their gift. Ruiz received 85kg and Gavi 68.5kg — 153.5kg in total.

Local officials describe the custom as "a hallmark of the municipality for honouring its great athletes." Former Manchester City winger Jesús Navas, the first player from the town to win a World Cup in 2010, also attended.

The town will rename football fields after Ruiz and Gavi, and plans to erect a monument dedicated to all three champions from Los Palacios.
