Fubara Handed Over All Appointing Position in Rivers to Wike. He Agreed Not to Run for 2nd Term- Robinson Ewor
Dr. Robinson Ewor, a Rivers State elder statesman, has alleged that Governor Siminalayi Fubara made significant political concessions to the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, during negotiations held after the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.
Speaking during an interview with Arise News on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Ewor claimed that the negotiations resulted in a series of agreements that reshaped the political arrangement in Rivers State.
According to him, Fubara agreed to hand over control of the leadership of the 23 local government areas to Wike's political camp as part of the settlement.
He further alleged that the governor also conceded the authority to determine appointments into state parastatals and other appointive positions.
Ewor added that Fubara agreed not to seek a second term in office and accepted additional conditions, including the removal of the Chief of Staff and the Secretary to the State Government.
"During the declaration of the state of emergency, Fubara went on negotiation with Wike's team. During that negotiation, Fubara handed over the leadership of the 23 local government of the state to the FCT minister. He handed over all appointing position in the state to the FCT Minister. He agreed not to run for a second term," he said.
According to the elder statesman, the governor's greatest mistake was failing to communicate the outcome of the negotiations to those who had stood by him throughout the political crisis.
He argued that supporters expected Fubara to return after the discussions and explain the terms of the agreement as well as the realities of the new political situation.
Ewor maintained that instead of openly addressing his supporters, the governor continued to act as though nothing had changed, creating confusion among those who had defended him during the prolonged confrontation.
He also argued that the Rivers political crisis could have been avoided if Fubara had been transparent from the outset.
According to him, many supporters entered the struggle without knowing the real cause of the dispute between the governor and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Ewor said the widespread belief at the time was that Wike was preventing Fubara from governing effectively, a perception that encouraged many Rivers residents, including himself, to publicly support the governor.
He maintained that greater openness from the beginning would have prevented much of the misunderstanding that surrounded the political crisis.
