Figo Names Mbappe, Rodri, Vitinha, Doue Among Ballon d'Or 2026 Favourites.
Former Real Madrid and Portugal winger Luis Figo has identified four players he believes are leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, citing their performances for club and country over the past season.
Figo named Spain midfielder Rodri, Portugal's Vitinha and French stars Kylian Mbappe and Desire Doue as the standout candidates for football's most prestigious individual award. He said each player had enjoyed an impressive campaign despite experiencing varying fortunes at the recently concluded FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Betfair, Figo praised Rodri for his commanding displays throughout the World Cup, noting that although the Manchester City midfielder did not produce many goals or assists, his overall influence and consistency made him one of the tournament's best performers.
The former Ballon d'Or winner also highlighted Mbappe's outstanding World Cup campaign, insisting that the France captain has once again positioned himself among the strongest candidates for the award after another prolific season at both club and international levels.
Figo further turned attention to Paris Saint-Germain, singling out Vitinha and Desire Doue for their contributions to the club's UEFA Champions League triumph.
While acknowledging that Portugal endured a disappointing World Cup campaign, he maintained that both players had done enough across the season to remain firmly in contention for the Ballon d'Or.
The 2026 Ballon d'Or race is expected to be one of the most competitive in recent years, with several players strengthening their credentials through domestic league performances, European competitions and the FIFA World Cup. The shortlist for the prestigious award is expected to be announced later this year.
